When two technical analysts play Euroleague Fantasy
Seeing as this is our inaugural post, we feel obliged to thank you in advance for taking the time to read through our website despite having multiple (and probably better) alternatives out there. This means something we have done has caught your attention and we are certainly proud of this! But enough with the niceties...let's cut to the chase!
This "Round 0" post serves as a pilot for everyone to familiarise themselves with the template and the schedule we will follow throughout the 2023/24 Euroleague season. A couple of days ahead of every round we will publish a post with up to 10 Euroleague Fantasy picks, split by position (2 Centers, 4 Forwards, 4 Guards) - worth noting that the coaches are not officially part of the "suggestion package" but we may occasionally squeeze one in if we strongly feel like it. This is a "best efforts" format and it may change according to the peculiarities of any certain round (be it for the number of total picks or the positional split).
Every Fantasy "pick" will be followed by a short paragraph explaining the rationale of our selection, which you should expect it to be very much NOT scientific. We are NOT basketball analysts, we are basketball fans. We will rely primarily on our gut, with any other source of "inspiration" (technical or otherwise) being complementary at best.
All the picks will have to comply with our freshly-made up Golden Rule and the accompanying considerations which you can find in the Rulebook tab of our site. Please familiarise yourselves with the concept to avoid feeling confused by certain choices. If you think you have understood the concept but you still feel confused by certain picks, that's fine! It is our feelings that matter!
Even though intuition remains the main fuel of our player-picking engine, we have attempted to at least provide some quantitative background. If you are looking for science to tell you why, for example, picking a Center playing against Real Madrid or Olympiacos Piraeus last season was a bad idea , simply visit our PIR Data page and the Team Opponents PIR section for the season 2022/23. In the same tab you will also find other useful PIR-related information, with more exciting PIR data to come once the new season starts. Free tip: Edy Tavares and Moustapha Fall have not changed teams....
We have also created a "side gig" where we have built one Fantasy team each and go head-to-head, drawing picks every round from a fixed pool of Euroleague teams. Description of the terms of the "duel" can be seen in the Head2Head tab. We will update the Head2Head table results and keep score for every round. If you are asking yourselves whether this is somehow relevant to the main "picking" page the answer is: it isn't! It is mainly meant to polarise!
Lastly, if you are wondering who is writing all of this, take a look at our About tab. It is not gonna explain why you are spending time reading it but you may feel related at least!
Regards,
Highlow
